What it actually is
A long, oversized coat made from a wool blend. Wool is still the best coat fibre there is: each fibre is naturally crimped, so the cloth is full of tiny air pockets that hold your body heat, and unlike synthetics it keeps insulating when the air is damp — which is most of a British winter. It also breathes, so you do not overheat the moment you step onto a train. The cut here is oversized and long: dropped, relaxed shoulders leave room for a jumper or a blazer underneath without the coat pulling across the back, and the below-the-knee hem covers dresses and skirts completely. Long and loose in a heavy natural fibre is also the most flattering combination there is, because the coat falls in one uninterrupted vertical line.
