What it actually is
A classic bomber: a zip-front jacket with knitted ribbing at the collar, cuffs and hem. The ribbing is what defines the shape — it pulls the jacket in at three points, so the body blouses slightly in between and the whole thing sits away from you instead of clinging. That is also what makes a bomber warm without being bulky: the elastic ribbing seals the openings so warm air stays inside. The length stops at the hip, which keeps it easy over jeans, dresses and skirts alike, and the clean lines and simple hardware are why the shape has survived since the 1940s without really changing.
